Résumé

"First, there is a great tension between the community and the individual. In many approaches to community it seems that the needs of the community are placed above the needs of the individual. I believe that this tension doesn't necessitate the sacrifice of either the needs of the individual or the needs of the community in favour of the other. Viewed within this ethical framework, both create and maintain the health and well-being of the other. Second, there is a tendency for communities to become exclusive. This relates to the first barrier when the needs of the community are placed above the needs of the individual. Individuals that do not conform to the defined community are often excluded. This exclusion is detrimental to both individuals and communities. Third is the approach and implementation of safety. Safety is often understood as "protection against", versus "freedom to." Again, this related to the first to barriers mentioned." -- pages 6-7.
