Association for Safer Cape Breton Communities (Synopsis)

Cape Breton Regional Police Service

Description: The Cape Breton Regional Police Service, in partnership with Cape Breton University, has established the Association for Safer Cape Breton Communities, a 52-member group headed by a Cape Breton Regional Police Service sergeant and seven-member board of directors. This is a multidisciplinary, community-driven organization that meets once a month to discuss options for ensuring healthier and safer neighborhoods in the Cape Breton Regional Municipality. This approach to community safety in Cape Breton has been in place since 2008.
Objective: The objective of the Association for Safer Cape Breton Communities is to ensure healthier and safer neighborhoods in Cape Breton.
Outcomes: The group’s work has led to the establishment of community offices and other crime reduction initiatives, including youth programs and a youth multi-purpose access centre, and has encouraged more community involvement among residents. Four geographically specific projects emerged from this initiative: the North Sydney Community Project, the New Waterford Community Safety Project, the Glace Bay Community Safety Project and the Sydney Mines Community Safety Project. Large samples of residents were surveyed in each of these communities to determine priorities. Different municipal agencies and community groups are taking action to address the priorities identified, including accelerated enforcement by the Cape Breton Regional Police Service. An internal evaluation of the Association for Safer Cape Breton Communities is planned.
Resources: A Cape Breton Regional Police Service sergeant was seconded to the Association for Safer Cape Breton Communities as Executive Director. The Cape Breton Regional Police Service pays the sergeant’s salary. The Association’s office and support staff are provided free of charge by Cape Breton University. The Association, in partnership with the Cape Breton Regional Police Service, will occasionally hire individuals with funding from grants offered by government agencies such as Service Canada and Service Nova Scotia. Funding is obtained through grants and small membership fees. Office space for community offices is provided free of charge by the Cape Breton Regional Island Housing Authority.
