Social Media Pilot Project (Synopsis)

Royal Canadian Mounted Police—'F' Division

Description: Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) 'F' Division in Saskatchewan launched a one-year social media pilot project in 2012 to use social media in a non-investigative role as a communications instrument. This pilot has several objectives:
  • test the effectiveness of social media;
  • identify the resources needed to sustain the use of social media permanently;
  • guide policy development and establish guidelines and best practices; and
  • identify any additional social media tools that should be considered.

The pilot project is being implemented in phases, starting with the Media Relations and Communications units and growing to include detachments and operational and non-operational units. During the pilot, social media will be used to communicate messages about the RCMP in Saskatchewan, including the history of the RCMP, little known facts about the RCMP, recruitment information, news and current events and crisis information. Increased interaction with the community is likely to lead to greater cooperation and engagement with police and increased credibility. An evaluation is planned for the end of the pilot to determine the future of this program.
