On June 3, 2020, an incident took place at the Turkish Embassy in Ottawa,
Proposed Response:
- I am aware of reports of an incident involving a suspicious vehicle that took place at the Turkish Embassy in Ottawa.
- Both Ottawa Police Services, and the RCMP responded to this incident.
- Precautionary measures to ensure public safety were taken to evacuate the Embassy and to close surrounding streets.
- I can confirm that one suspect was taken into custody.
- Police officials continue to investigate this incident.
Background:
On the evening of June 3, 2020, National Division Operational Communication Centre (OCC) advised that there had been a suspicious call to 911 to fire for a sinking hole in the back of the Turkish embassy in Ottawa involving a vehicle and a male subject acting suspiciously.
Ottawa Police Services (OPS), and RCMP responded, including RCMP’s Protective Response Unit (PRU), Emergency Response Team (ERT), and the Chemical Biological Radiological Nuclear and Explosive unit (CBRNE).
Cautionary measures to evacuate the embassy and close streets in the neighborhood were taken. Buildings on either side of the Turkish Embassy on Wurtemburg Street were evacuated while a suspicious package and vehicle were being investigated.
The embassy and the vehicle were cleared by police. Just after 5 a.m. on Thursday morning, police announced that the scene had been cleared and that all roads had been reopened.
One suspect has been taken into custody. The embassy and the vehicle were cleared by police.
Police officials continue to investigate.
