Ottawa, January 14, 2011 — The Honourable Vic Toews, Canada's Minister of Public Safety, today announced the re-appointment of Mr. Ian McPhail as Vice Chair and Interim Chair of the Commission for Public Complaints Against the RCMP, for a period of one year.

“I am pleased to re-appoint Mr. McPhail as Vice Chair and Interim Chair of the Commission for Public Complaints Against the RCMP,” said Minister Toews. “Over the last year, Mr. McPhail has demonstrated a strong commitment to the RCMP public complaint process.”

Mr. McPhail was appointed as Vice Chair and Interim Chair of the Commission in January 2010. He has a strong history of working to protect the public interest and was a recipient of the Ontario Bicentennial Medal in recognition of his achievements. The Commission is an independent agency created by Parliament that ensures complaints made by the public about the conduct of RCMP members are examined fairly and impartially.

“As Vice Chair and Interim Chair, Mr. McPhail will continue helping our government work to ensure Canada's national police force becomes a stronger, more modern organization,” stated Minister Toews.

Bill C-38 Ensuring the Effective Review of RCMP Civilian Complaints Act, which proposes a new modern, independent review body, was introduced in the House of Commons on June 14, 2010 and is currently awaiting Second Reading.
