Merit process

The Search and Rescue New Initiatives Fund (SAR NIF) merit process is a review of applications for funding received following a call for proposals. The merit process is how projects are selected for funding.

Once the merit process has ended and the projects have been approved by Public Safety, applicants and partners will be advised of the results.

Merit board

Applications for funding are reviewed by the SAR NIF Merit Board including federal, provincial/territorial, and volunteer SAR partner representatives. Applications are assessed on eligibility and ability to:

  • Meet the objectives and priorities of the SAR program
  • Meet the priorities of a supporting SAR partner
  • Meet the identified need through the project activities, results and outcomes

The merit board will assess all aspects of the proposed project including the management capacity of the applicant and the financial risks.
The merit board will also weigh if any consultation took place with a SAR partner and if they gave their support and endorsement.

Approved projects

Applicants who are successful will be contacted to enter into a funding agreement to set the terms and conditions for funding and the project's start date.

Once the agreement is signed, recipients must ensure they understand and meet the terms and conditions of the agreement over the entire funding period. This includes submitting financial, non-financial, annual and final reports, and sharing information as outlined in the project's communication strategy.
