Issue

Minister’s prerogative to extend the timeframe to request financial assistance.

2.1 Requests for Assistance

2.1.1 Any request for financial assistance under the DFAA must be made by the province within six months of the end of the event. The request takes the form of a letter from the Premier of the province to the Prime Minister or from the provincial Minister Responsible for Emergency Preparedness to the federal Minister.

Section 2.1.1 is amended to the following:

2.1.1 Any request for financial assistance under the DFAA must be made by the province within six months of the end of the event. When exceptional circumstances occur, the Minister may choose to extend this period. The request takes the form of a letter from the Premier of the province to the Prime Minister or from the provincial Minister Responsible for Emergency Preparedness to the federal Minister.

Principle

Based on exceptional circumstances as described by the affected province or territory, the Minister of Public Safety may consider an extension to the timeframe within which a request for financial assistance under the DFAA must be made.
