This project's phase I report and the analysis of statistics from the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM) show that in the Sud-Ouest borough, the number of street gang events per thousand inhabitants has, since 2002, always been higher than the Montreal average. Incidentally, such events have multiplied over the last years and gang-related activities have diversified in the Sud-Ouest.
Above all, this two-year project plans to develop a concerted action plan including activities targeted by the project, as well as actions undertaken by various partners. Among the project's activities, there are two series of visits to the sector's eleven primary and two secondary schools. The objectives of these visits are to inform students about the project's existence, invite young people to participate in the activities, and induce them to form positive gangs or strengthen existing positive gangs. There shall be at least one significant adult in each gang (teacher, police officer, streetworker). Explanatory leaflets about gangs will be produced.
The sponsoring organization, in collaboration with its partners, will implement a contest for such gangs that are formed. The parameters of the contest will be found in the leaflet to be advertised in the media. For the contest, the groups of young people shall present an activities project (sports, cultural, social), a schedule and an evaluation of their actions.
Awareness and information workshops on gangs are also planned for 6th grade students, with an emphasis on the distinction between the roles played by girls and those played by boys in gangs. A resource card will also be distributed to the students.
Finally, awareness and information workshops on street gangs will be offered to the sector's parents and adult groups (Club Richelieu, Club Optimiste, etc.).
