Purpose : |
The main idea for this project is to address the urgent need for increased positive mentorship and recreational services for the youth of Arviat.
The program will focus on giving high risk youth, particularly those from families with difficult home lives due to factors of poverty, parents gambling, substance abuse and inadequate parenting skills, a chance to participate in after school activities with their academic peers in a nurturing non-judgemental setting. Each high risk youth will be paired with a peer partner who has been selected based on skills and interest assessment.
The project activities will incorporate traditional Inuit values while teaching practical and relevant skills. The program will include 3-hour sessions on Monday, Tuesday and Friday evenings with a focus on woodworking, sewing, mechanics and cooking. There will also be a youth-chosen activity on Thursday evenings.
For four hours on Saturdays there will be two youth counsellors available. There are currently no youth counsellor services in Arviat.
On Saturday evenings the Justice Committee will host a family night focussing on a topic chosen by the youth.
