Purpose : |
The Peguis Project Venture project will work with 210 high-risk Aboriginal children and youth ages 11-17 years over 36 months to prevent and reduce substance abuse, drug-related crime and interpersonal violence.
This project replicates Project Venture, an evidence-based program that has earned Model Program recognition by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration through the United States Department of Health and Human Services. Project Venture aims to develop a positive self-concept, effective social skills, a community service ethic, increase self-control, and increase decision-making and problem-solving skills.
Peguis Project Venture will include adaptations specific to Cree cultural beliefs, traditions and values. The activities planned will address the identified risk factors and build upon existing protective factors within the community, which has abundant resources to support this comprehensive project.
