Purpose : |
The Office of African Nova Scotia Affairs will implement the Legal Enrichment and Decision-Making (LEAD) program for at-risk children and youth that is designed to assist them in assessing difficult situations, making appropriate decisions, understanding consequences, developing and maintaining positive attitudes towards police and the justice system, and maintaining positive educational and career aspirations.
Project LEAD has proven to be culturally appropriate in communities with high African American populations experiencing overrepresentation in the criminal justice system, high rates of drug related crime and strained relationships with police and the justice system. The Office of African Nova Scotian Affairs proposes to test Project LEAD in four Nova Scotia communities facing similar situations – Glace Bay, Whitney Pier, New Glasgow, and Digby.
