This project will organize, implement and facilitate a 2 day symposium that focuses on crime prevention in the Aboriginal community. The symposium will explore the impacts of racism and colonization on the emotional, physical, mental and spiritual lives of Aboriginal youth, their families and communities; and how theses impacts relate to crime and victimization. Working to heal the whole person in the context of healthy family and community relationship is the central premise of a holistic approach. The symposium will focus on the 7 Grandfather Teachings to further explore crime prevention. In addition to receiving education on how traditional teachings relate to crime prevention, the symposium participants will identify needs within the urban Aboriginal population and will create a short-term plan for crime prevention. The second component of the project is to pilot a training course on community-based conflict resolution for service providers to build capacity in working with Aboriginal communities. |
