Purpose : |
The proposed project intends to deliver the Quest: Life Skills Program for Boys to male youth ranging in age from 10 to 18 years old. The Quest programs will be developed and delivered by the YWCA Muskoka and will consist of gender-based life skills programming in school-based settings to address risk factors such as: aggressive behaviour, negative peer association, low attachment to school/community, and substance use/abuse among male youth.
Participants will be identified by school staff as well as referrals from community partners. Participants will be assessed using a standardized risk assessment tool to ensure the intervention is tailored to the risk factors they are experiencing. These interventions will be delivered by trained program facilitators in up to 18 elementary and four secondary schools throughout Muskoka.
This intervention is a promising practice which includes several components, such as: the use of a risk assessment tool to determine which risk factors participants are experiencing, followed by education and training, mentoring, health and drugs education, sports, group development, and personal assessment (based on the risk factors identified) for the purpose of goal setting and personal development.
