The Youth Employment Skills and Mentoring Initiative consists of the following components: Structured Workplace Mentoring, Pre-Employment and Job Skills Instruction, Life/Social Skills Training and Facilitating Social Connections, Drug Education and Tutoring and Educational Supports.
For the clientele of Waypoints, (youth and young adults with substance use issues and mental health issues, including emotional and behavioral disorders), and those who will be the majority of young people involved in the project, it was identified that best practice consisted of "a skill-building approach which supports the development of positive identity and enhanced self esteem"
The expected outcomes of this project include improved attitude toward work and school, increased self-confidence, improved life skills, increased knowledge of the consequences of drug abuse and how to resist drugs, increased motivation to change risky behaviour, reduction in substance abuse and anti-social behaviour, increased in attachment to school and work and increased healthier life choices and positive relationships. In the long term, the project aims to reduce the likelihood of offending for participating youth and young adults at risk of offending and re-offending.
