Purpose : |
The project will use a comprehensive individualized wraparound service approach which has shown promise in diverting high risk youth away from violence and crime and toward leading more productive and positive lives. The foundation of this community-based highly individualized approach is to identify the available community services needed in order to address the risk factors identified and provide them for as long as they are needed.
In order to provide the youth and their families with the intense individualized support needed to assist them to move away from a life of crime and substance use/abuse, participants will continually undergo needs assessments in order to ensure that they are receiving the most appropriate services and support needed as they progress through the project.
The range of activities/interventions will include:
- Assessment of individual youth and development of specific support plans to build resiliency and respond to youth's needs
- Individualized Advocacy and Support
- Mentorship (assertiveness training, role modeling, role playing)
- Family Activities/Workshops (which could include: parenting groups, monthly newsletter, and family dinners, in order to build healthier relationships)
- Education/Awareness for relevant stakeholders to challenges/barriers faced by aboriginal youth at risk
- Life and Social Skills Development and training through youth workshops and group sessions (i.e. cooking skills, computer skills, literacy/study skills, employment skills, self esteem, resistance to peer pressure, substance use/abuse, etc).
- Business and service agency tours and volunteer opportunities
