Purpose : |
This project will build the knowledge and the capacity needed by Aboriginal communities across the Province of Prince Edward Island to develop and/or adopt effective culturally sensitive crime prevention practices.
The proposed approach reflects the need for crime prevention in Aboriginal communities to involve a holistic approach and is derived from Mi’Kmaq priorities and values. The Mawita’jik project will involve communities, families, service providers and youth in activities designed to foster the acquisition of the knowledge and building the capacity needed to support effective crime prevention and reduction.
The project will utilize culturally appropriate learning techniques (e.g., learning by doing), to first build community crime prevention capacity and then build the capacity of service providers (including schools and police) and of youth themselves to contribute to crime prevention and reduction in communities.
