This volunteer based program focuses on empowering urban Aboriginal female children ages 7-18 living in Winnipeg's inner city. Through mentorship, role modeling, hands on learning, volunteerism and youth leadership development, the project will provide a coordinated and holistic response to meeting the unique needs of female children living and growing in urban settings. Project activities are aimed at empowering young girls to dream and achieve greatness through improved self-confidence, self-esteem, and self-knowledge in the spirit of sisterhood. Activities include developing/refining a mentor program, screening of volunteers, ongoing assessment of children/youth and appropriate referral; training of volunteers; making mentor matches; training parents and children; providing group activities; monitoring; linking families to additional community supports; evaluating programs and community linkages; undertaking community development and advocacy; scheduling large group activities; providing opportunities to recognize volunteers; and reassessing children in terminated matches, and referral to other mentoring options. Sharing circles, crafts, baking, story telling, movies, workshops, guest speakers and elder teachings will be employed. |
