ARCHIVED - Minister of Public Safety emphasizes need for collaboration, preparedness at security conference

Delivers keynote address on the threat environment, and government preparedness

OTTAWA, October 25, 2011 – Today, the Honourable Vic Toews, Canada's Minister of Public Safety, delivered a keynote address at SecureTech 2011, a conference focussing on increasing dialogue around six key themes: critical infrastructure, cybersecurity, disaster management and emergency planning, identity and access management, and maritime security and transportation security.

The Minister stressed the importance of remaining vigilant to threats and continuing to build the resilience of our society.

“Canada is not immune to threats such as terrorism, which is a global problem. Countering terrorism requires the collaboration of many partners across the Government of Canada, the provinces and territories, law enforcement, the intelligence community, international allies, industry, citizens, and communities.” said Minister Toews. “By working together, making the best use of technologies, and sharing best practices, we can ensure greater safety and security for Canadians.”

In addition to its work to combat terrorism at home and abroad, Public Safety Canada is continuing to collaborate with partners to find shared solutions to ensure border security and to protect critical infrastructure, to prevent cyber security attacks, and prepare for national emergencies. Public Safety Canada is continuing to work to:

• address border security threats (joint U.S.-Canada Declaration on a Shared Vision for Perimeter Security and Economic Competitiveness);
• respond to cyber security attacks (Canada's Cyber Security Strategy) and promote cyber security awareness (October is Cyber Security Awareness Month);
• respond to national emergencies and threats (Federal Emergency Response Plan); and
• protect our critical infrastructure (National Strategy for Critical Infrastructure).

“The organizers of this conference have brought you together to discuss issues of critical importance to public safety and security,” said Minister Toews. “Through this conference, you are building networks, informing policy development and nurturing the next generation of security and intelligence thinkers and leaders. You are providing an invaluable service to government and to Canadians.”
