February 8, 2011 — The Honourable Vic Toews, Canada's Public Safety Minister, today issued the following statement to mark Safer Internet Day:

“As Canadians increasingly live, work, and play in cyberspace, we must recognize the dangers that exist in an online world. Safer Internet Day is an important opportunity for all Canadians to recognize the risks and exercise online safety when engaging in online activities. Today marks the eighth Safer Internet Day, a global initiative aimed at working together to raise awareness of the vulnerabilities – particularly of young people – through activities on the Internet.

Boosting this awareness will help Canadian families recognize and take steps against threats online, whether they're engaging in online shopping or recognizing a suspicious-looking e-mail. Guarding against cyber threats requires that everyone – including governments, businesses and individual Canadians – take the necessary steps to protect themselves and keep personal information safe.

That is why the Government will continue to work with our valued partners such as the RCMP's National Child Exploitation Coordination Centre and the Canadian Centre for Child Protection who are already achieving admirable results in the fight against the online victimization of children.

The Government of Canada recently announced Canada's Cyber Security Strategy, which will secure Government of Canada cyber systems, enhance partnerships to secure vital cyber systems outside of the federal government and protect Canadians as they connect to each other and the world. Canada's Cyber Security Strategy is a cornerstone of our Government's commitment to keep Canada – including our cyberspace – safe, secure and prosperous.”
