Summary

PERF conducted the project described in this report, which was designed to obtain the first nationwide assessment of the state of the field regarding eyewitness identification procedures used by law enforcement agencies. The PERF project included several elements: a comprehensive review of the research literature on eyewitness identification procedures; a national survey of a random stratified sample of law enforcement agencies in the United States regarding their eyewitness identification policies, training, and procedures; and a series of in-depth follow-up interviews of officials in 30 selected agencies.
