Summary
The Provincial Government recently issued their annual report on Police Resources in British
Columbia for the year 2008. The data is consistent with previous years and continues to
support VicPD’s position that more resources are required and the increase in policing costs for
Esquimalt and Victoria is comparable to other municipal departments.
Victoria and Esquimalt continue to have the highest crime rate however, for the first year in
many years it does not have the highest case load. The average municipal case load is 46,
New Westminster’s is 61, Abbotsford’s 57 and VicPD’s case load is 55. VicPD’s reduction in
caseload was due to the hiring of 19 additional officers.
