"This thesis addresses improving police responses to the mentally ill in the community of New Westminster. In suggesting how the New Westminster Police Service (NWPS) can be apprised of appropriate approach and services to the mentally ill, the following research questions are offered: 1. What is required to help the NWPS work with the mental health system to improve communication, training, information sharing, and the referral system to provide a better service to the community of New Westminster? 2. What are the barriers and challenges that the NWPS faces when responding to individuals with mental disorders in the community?"--Page 2.
