Summary

This paper presents an overview of a research project that examined the different sorts of research that are being funded in the area of crime prevention. Information sources included Internet searches of funding activities and publications since the mid-1990s, interviews with over 100 experts, both academics and practitioners, a literature review of published books and articles, reports from past funding initiatives, and governmental publications on crime prevention since 1990. Areas of crime prevention under examination were physical design and access control strategies, neighborhood mobilization strategies, partnership approaches, school-based prevention strategies, prevention programs for businesses, individual prevention activities, community prevention initiatives, citizen fear of crime, developmental prevention, firearm control, anti-gang programs, and repeat victimization. The report research sought to identify those crime prevention programs and activities that need no further study; the issues, topics, or programs that should be focused on over the next 5 years; and methods or approaches for addressing future research needs. The research also identified the need to tie the diverse avenues of crime prevention into a unified and consistent package of activities with the potential to drive a research and evaluation agenda.
