Summary

This report provides a review of a number of educational programs that were designed to alter the knowledge, attitudes and behaviour of youth. It was produced as part of the Crime Prevention component, of the Community Safety and Crime Prevention Initiative at Justice Canada. Part 1 provides background information on the organization of the report, and data sources used. Part 2 describes the role of the Public Legal Education and Crime Prevention initiative, as well as a psychological premise for persuasion, resistance, and attitude change. Part 3 describes 17 "Youth In School" programs which apply 7 different behaviour-modification approaches: Social Pressure Resistance Skills, Heightened Awareness, Empowerment, Social Skills Development, Psychosocial, Bonding, and Health Belief. Part 4 describes three "Youth Out Of School" programs which all employ a Social Pressure Resistance Skills strategy to behaviour modification. Part 5 describes eight adult behaviour modification programs which apply three different approaches: Experimental Learning, Clinical Developmental, and Showmen Routine. Part 6 discusses and synthesizes 8 components of successful programs: target group, age, cognition, instructor training, peer leaders, audience interaction, peer pressure resistance skills and follow-up sessions. Appendix A is an annotated bibliography.
