Developed by Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the Leadership and Resiliency Program (LRP) is a promising program, one of eleven model or promising crime prevention programs identified by the National Crime Prevention Centre (NCPC).
The program is designed to increase students’ perceptions of competence and self-worth, improve participant identification with positive roles, reduce disciplinary actions in school, improve participants’ communication and refusal skills, increase knowledge of and negative attitudes about substance abuse and violence, and increase community involvement in promoting the healthy development of youth and the valuing of adolescents.
The Leadership and Resiliency Program aims to develop positive relationships, coping strategies and assist youth setting goals throughout three main program components:
Resiliency Groups focusing on substance use, anger management, peer and family relationships, and goal setting, Service Learning Activities including working with community Elders, persons with disabilities and other social service community agencies and High Adventure Activities including indoor/outdoor sports and on-the-land cultural camps.
