Purpose : |
“Welcome to My Life” is a youth after-school program, which will increase resiliency among its female participants to prevent victimization. Seven modules will be developed and delivered to Grade 7 girls dealing with issues around decision-making and conflict resolution, unhealthy/healthy relationships, self-esteem, identity, values, personal safety and social situations, and online safety. The eight-week program will be implemented by high school and post secondary school students, as well as adults. These individuals will be provided with leadership and program facilitation training to ensure they have the skills necessary for this work. Parents will also be provided a training module, which will introduce them to the issues their daughters face. In addition to being introduced to the issues, the parents will be given tools to support these girls during this critical period in their lives. The parents' training module will be translated into 10 different languages so that it is accessible to a wider audience.
The project will also aim to engage and involve youth in their community. To do so, participants will be introduced to “community service learning” and then they will be encouraged to choose a community issue, research it, and develop a volunteer project to address it. Once the project is completed, students will reflect on their impact on the community. The project will also include the development of a website with areas specifically designed for youth and others for parents.
