Purpose : |
The mediation approach in a context of authority is a method for managing family conflicts. It is a holistic approach designed to recognize the strengths and weaknesses of all persons involved in the conflict and their ability to identify, with appropriate assistance, their own needs and solutions (FILION, 2002). Taking this approach with children in care affords an opportunity to work toward ending a conflictual situation by setting goals for improving the parent-child relationship in a climate of mutual respect.
Mediation in a context of protection is based on conflict resolution and cooperation methods developed in family mediation. The approach provides a problem resolution and cooperative communication structure involving the simultaneous participation of all persons in the conflict. It fosters a systemic approach to difficulties experienced within the family. It focuses on valuing and applying existing skills and resources by involving the various parties in, and prompting them to accept, corrective measures in a context of respect for their rights and abilities and of recognition of the need to change their situation instead of just accepting the determination of failure in the initial diagnosis of the problem.
