The crime prevention project will target 150 youths residing at Carry the Kettle First Nation, between the ages of 10 and 18 along with their family supports, with specific emphasis on young people experiencing multiple risk factors for participating in criminal activity, and reoffending. The project will provide skills training, develop local knowledge on how to prevent drug abuse, work with parents and youths to increase family cohesion, conflict resolution, stability and safety. The project will provide accessible and age appropriate activities to strengthen family units and community social controls against drug and alcohol abuse. The project will directly engage youths in interventions of skill building for positive social engagement, peer mentoring, leadership training, recreation programming, and in creating crime reduction programs that offer youth structured and supervised alternatives to substance abuse, relationship abuse and property crime. The project will increase stakeholder partnerships in strengthening family roles, increasing access to helpers in the school and community and increasing the effectiveness of relationships with police, correctional authorities, family serving agencies and Elders.
