Review of Police Interaction with Persons with a Mental Illness (Synopsis)

Description: In May 2012, the ministry undertook a review of Police Interactions with Persons with Mental Illness (PIPMI) which includes information gathered on current practices at police services across Ontario and in other jurisdictions, as well as a comprehensive academic literature review. This review was completed in August 2013.

As part of the Ministry’s Future of Policing project, stakeholders on the Future of Policing Advisory Committee and in its working groups have also been discussing police service delivery to persons with mental health issues.
Objective: The work of the Future of Policing Project and the PIPMI review includes consultations with other ministries such as Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, that will inform the development of proposals for legislative, regulatory and policy change in the area of police service delivery, including how to improve police response to persons with mental illness.
Outcomes: Proposals for legislative, regulatory and policy change are anticipated in spring 2015.
