Internet Safety (Synopsis)

Royal Canadian Mounted Police—'H' Division—Enfield Detachment

Description: Launched in 2013, the Internet Safety initiative is an awareness campaign featuring Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) presentations delivered to all elementary and middle schools within East Hants. The initiative shows youth and parents how to stay safe on the Internet. It also addresses appropriate use of the Internet and deals with major crimes that occur online, such as the possession and distribution of images that could constitute child pornography. Other areas covered include YouTube and Facebook safety, the dangers of violent Internet games, “sexting” and cyberbullying.
Objective: The objective of the initiative is to educate youth and parents on Internet safety. RCMP ‘H’ Division aims to deliver its Internet Safety presentation to all students in Hants County. The division also aims to make parents more aware of what their children are doing on the Internet and to provide parents with cyber-safety tips.
Outcomes: An evaluation generated many positive comments from teachers, students and parents on the presentations. ‘H’ Division continues to receive requests for additional presentations.
Resources: The only costs involved are the officer-hours required to prepare and deliver the initiative.
